General Information About Jorpokhri

Jorpokhri is a tiny village on a hilltop and located in Darjeeling district. From Darjeeling town near LepchaJagat. The place located about 23 km. away from fascinating Darjeeling town. And can be reached from the road to Mirik. Located at an altitude of 7,400 ft, the main feature of Jorpokhi is its twin lakes after which the place has been named.

The name of this village derives from two-lakes, ‘Jor’ meaning is two and ‘Pokhri’ meaning is Lake. Jorpokhri offers a magnificent view of Mt. Kanchenjunga along with a number of snowcapped ranges.

So obviously there are a couple of lakes in Jorpokhri, which constitutes the centre of attraction for tourists due to its rich natural environ. The lake is one of the very few places where you might get a glimpse of Himalayan Salamander, a highly endangered species of reptile. This is a very peaceful and romantic place, situated just above congested and over crowed Sukhiapokhri.

You can often see a large number of white swans swimming in the waters or strolling around in the nearby area. Jorpokhri, however, is not only about the lakes. There is a lovely forest around full of dhupi and pines. Just walk around and feel the lovely Himalayan serenity. Jorpokhri is part of Senchal forest and is a nature reserve.

The road from Siliguri to Jorpokhri is so charming and great experience through deep green scenery and tea gardens. The last two kilometres go through dense forest to the top of the hill and suddenly you will see flat land. Two well-decorated lakes are the main attraction of Jorpokhri, you can spend an entire day with lakes, mountains and silence. Take a small stroll to nearby Lord Shiva temple, the temple located at very nearby of the lake, also you can take a short trip to Pashupati Nath Market, Nepal border, Ghoom and Darjeeling.

Best Time To Visit Jorpokhri

The best season to get such a view is between Octobers to March. From one side of the lake, a paved pathway leads to a stairway and on top, there is a lovely shaded viewing area. This is the place to get the best views of the mountains, the beautifully landscaped gardens, the lake and the rows of pine trees. And from June to August (monsoons) if you wish very, rare sightings of the Himalayan Salamanders.

The boundaries of lakes are concreted and decorated with seats. On the water, you may find white swans are swimming. In the middle of the lake, a model of huge snake is erected along with a fountain. From the northern side of the lake, the spectacular view of the snow-capped Himalayas including Mt. Kanchenjunga will surely mesmerise you. From the other side, the landscape of Darjeeling will be left you speechless. The best time to visit Jorpokhri is from October to March. If you are a wildlife enthusiast you may try during monsoons as the chance of spotting highly endangered amphibian Salamander (resembles with lizard) will be much higher. If you are spending a night then during the afternoon or next day morning a jungle trail amidst green will rejuvenate you. While you can see the entire Kanchenjunga range on one side, you can view the cities of Darjeeling and Kurseong on the other side. Sunrise is a beautiful experience from here. Jorpokhri falls within the Senchal Forest area.

Attractions around Jorpokhri

Darjeeling, Mirik, Lepchajagat and Kurseong – These are nearby towns that can be easily visited in day trips. Nearby Sukhiapokhri is the spot for taking the Sandakphu Trek, so trekkers can also stay at Jorpokhri before the trek to Sandakphu. You can also visit Pashupati Nath Market (presently in Nepal) for buying some local ware. It is in the India-Nepal border area and is 30 minutes from Jorpokhri. The Senchal Forest Area and Tea Gardens are close by and can also be visited. Lepchajagat is another nearby village to visit, which is only 5.5 kilometres from Jorpokhri. This place also offers beautiful views of Mt. Kanchenjunga.

Activities at Jorpokhri

The most enjoyable activity here is the views of Mt. Kanchenjunga. You can also take leisurely walks in the surrounding green Senchal forest area that is a natural reserve of dhupi and pine trees. You can do some marketing at Pashupati Nath market of Nepal.

You can simply sit and relax in the landscaped gardens by the lake that have seating arrangements and a water fountain in the middle of the lake. From here you can also get a superb view of the Mt. Kanchenjunga, from a shaded area on higher grounds. You can also feed the geese and swan in the pokhri. You can also take day trips to Lepchajagat, Mirik, and Darjeeling.

Nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP) and the nearest airport is Bagdogra (IXB), direct car/taxis are available from NJP, Siliguri and Bagdogra. The distance about 75 kms from Siliguri to Jorpokhri via Dudhia and Mirik, it will take around three (3) hrs. Jorpokhri also can be reached from Siliguri through Kurseong and Ghoomthe, distance around 80 kms.

You also can reach Jorpokhri from Darjeeling via Ghoom, Lepcha Jagat, Sukhia Pokhari, it will around an hours.
