General Information About Tinchuley

Tinchuley or Tinchule is a mountain village near Darjeeling. It is a tourist destination attracting off-beat nature lovers.

It's a developing tourism place. In fact, the organization WWF (World Wide Federation) has been actively assisting some 17 families here to develop a model organic village and promote village tourism during the 1990s. Tourism in the area grew many times over the decades and today Tinchuley has a remarkable number of homestay, lodge, and resorts in and around.

Perched at an elevation of 5800ft, 32km from the Queen of Hills Darjeeling is quaint mountain village called Tinchuley. The quaint hamlet Tinchuley is a hidden jewel of Darjeeling region. The word Tinchuley was derived from the local language was “Tin” stands for the word “Three” and “Chuley” for “Oven” i.e. Three ovens. And such name to the village has been given because of the three prominent hilltops that surround the place and which from far look like ovens or chullahs.

If you love nature, the lovely views of the Himalayan range, like to see the meandering Teesta flow through the mountain landscapes, enjoy tea gardens, orange orchards, walking along village trails, watching birds, local culture, people and food, then this is the right place for you. The major attraction of Tinchuley is the calm and peaceful surrounding; you may go for a walk amidst the pine and oak trees which are in abundance in the area. There is hardly any traffic on the road and you may spend the entire day just roaming in the countryside blissfully; heedless of your city woes.

Best Time To Visit Tinchuley

Tinchuley can be visited throughout the year due to its favourable weather but to catch the unhindered view of the snow peaked Himalayan mountain range the best time to visit Tinchuley is from mid-September to December when the sky remains clear.

The Sunrise point is an excellent place to view sunrise in the morning. Also, this hilltop provides a fantastic view of the East Himalayan mountain range. Next to the viewpoint is the Tinchuley Monastery which is also worth a visit.

Walk for about 20 minutes through the forest of ferns and reach Gumbadara, another great viewpoint from where you see the river Rangeet and a part of Sikkim. The large rocks here have historical significance. They are great training grounds for rock climbers. There are also several caves here which you can explore.

Tinchuley should not be considered as a single destination, the whole area is quite popular for tourists and there are several tourist places within a few kilometres that can be visited based here. Takdah cantonment (3 km) and Rangli-Rangliot tea garden is just a few minutes’ drives away. All the sightseeing in this area can be covered from here easily.

Couple of km downhill drive from Tinchuley will take you to Mangwa area. The Chota Mangwa and Bara Mangwa hills, that have grown in popularity on their own right are again a few minutes drive away.

Lamahatta, a relatively new tourist destination that has come upon the Peshok road, is again just about 8 km away from here.
