General Information About Palmajua

Palmajua (পাল মাজুয়া) is a hidden Himalayan village located at an altitude of 7300 ft. above sea level and about the village is 130 km from Siliguri. This is a halting place for trekkers and for those, who seek for a place in Himalaya which offers peace and calm beautiful forested land and breath-taking views of the snowcapped peaks. It is best for those you like the tranquil lap of nature, homemade delicious food, eye for some great photography and lots of birds. Palmajua is home to hundreds of species of birds that make it a photographer’s dream destination. Surrounded by breathtaking hills and landscapes and little tourist footfall, it is the best place to refresh and rejuvenate.

From Manebhanjan, Palmajua is another 25kms and takes about 1 hour by car. Actually, Palmajua lies in the fringe of the well-known Singalila National Park which is the home to amazing animals like Red Panda, Pangolins and lot more, and close to 50 species of birds like Grey-headed Canary Flycatcher, Blue-capped Rock Thrush (female) Blue Whistling Thrush, yellow napped woodpecker.

Best Time To Visit Palmajua

The best season to get such a view is between Octobers to March. From one side of the lake, a paved pathway leads to a stairway and on top, there is a lovely shaded viewing area. This is the place to get the best views of the mountains, the beautifully landscaped gardens, the lake and the rows of pine trees. And from June to August (monsoons) if you wish very, rare sightings of the Himalayan Salamanders.

As I already mentioned, it's meant for those who are looking for a piece of land for themselves for a while away from the noise and crowd and complemented with wonderful views of Kanchenjunga Peaks and forested landscape. The sight of Mt. Kanchenjunga will lift your spirits. Visit the adjoining Singalila National park to sight the rare Red Panda, the weird Pangolin and close to 50 species of birds like Grey-headed Canary Flycatcher, Blue-capped Rock Thrush (female) Blue Whistling Thrush, yellow napped woodpecker.

Some great places you can visit and things you can experience around Palmajua includes Ramman hydel project, enjoying short treks through forested land, a viewpoint from where you can see Daramdin of West Sikkim which is well known for rose cultivation, watch the spectacular sunrise at Dhotrey, and visits to nearby places like Rimbik, Srikhola, Meghma, and even the summit of Singalila range Sandakphu. Other activities in Palmajua include fishing and picnic on the river, night safaris whereby you have great chances of spotting wildlife etc.

The nearest airport is Bagdogra and railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), direct taxi/car available from the airport, NJP and Siliguri. This village is located 135 km away from Siliguri through Pankhabari, Sonada and Ghoom. Palmajua is 32 km from Manebhanjan and 12 km from Dhotre. You also can reach Palmajua from Darjeeling and distance about 50 km through Bijanbari. Keep in mind when hiring any car about road condition, it’s advisable to hire only big cars (Jeep, Sumo, Bolero etc).

If you are trekking down from Sandakphu or Phalut, then from Rimbik you will need to trek down through a hamlet called Barahatta and then get to Palmajua (about 18kms from Rimbik). It takes about 3.5 hours on the trek and about 40 minutes by car to reach Palmajua from Rimbik.
