General Information About Deolo Hill

Deolo Hill is a hilltop located to the north-east of Kalimpong in West Bengal, is one of the two hills in between which the town of Kalimpong stands, at a distance of 10 km from Kalimpong Bus Station. From the top of this hill, tourists can enjoy attractive views of the surrounding villages of Relli valley and Teesta River along with the town of Kalimpong. In addition, there is a park located at the summit of this hill, which is built for recreational purposes. The hill is also the highest point of Kalimpong town, with a height reaching up to 1,704 meters above sea level.
Deolo Hill is one of the two hills in between the town of Kalimpong stands, the other one is Durpin Hill. Out of the three water reservoirs in Kalimpong, two of which are the primary source of drinking water, are located atop this hill. From the top of this hill, tourists can enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding villages of Relli valley and Teesta River along with the town of Kalimpong. On a clear day, the snow-clad mountains of West Sikkim are also visible from this hill.
At the summit of the hill, there is a park built for recreation purposes which feature exotic flowers. The park is a popular picnic spot for tourists as well as locals. There are also some viewpoints for the mesmerizing view of the sunset and sunrise. The hill also offers various adventure-sports like paragliding, horse riding and trekking.
There is a restaurant with accommodation at the highest point of Deolo Hill managed by the government. One can also visit a Buddha Statue perched on a large stone, a small Shiva temple and a large Hanuman temple with a large sculpture of the monkey god nearby.

Best Time To Visit Deolo

The best time to visit Deolo, Winter has more clear sky which is the best time to bask in the glorious vista of Himalayan range from Tinchuley viewpoint nearby Deolo.

Close to Deolo Hilltop is the Kalimpong Science City, which is also worth a visit if you have some extra hours in hand. If you are accompanied by children, then this place is worth a visit.
Durpin Dara (Dara = hilltop) is closer to the town on the opposite side of Deolo. This is the other end of the ridge on which the Kalimpong town exists. It is a great place to view the Teesta down below and Kanchenjunga up above and the Kalimpong town in between. You can also have a view of Dooars plain from here on a clear day.

Zong Dog Palri Fo-Brang Gompa: Built in the mid-1970s and consecrated by Dalai Lama at `Durpin Dara` Hill, 5km south of the town, this 'Gompa' (monastery) houses impressive wall-paintings and a rare three-dimensional `mandal` upstairs. You can climb the stairs and reach the top of the monastery for a better view of the surroundings. Groups of monks chanting prayers inside the main hall is an experience that you will remember for a long time.

Golf Course – The scenic golf course can be visited as part of the Sightseeing tour of Kalimpong town. This nine hole (12 greens) golf course is dedicated to the people of the town and its visitors by the Indian army.

Flower Nurseries: Kalimpong, an important orchid-growing area, also produces gladiolas and a variety of other flowers that are exported from here to the cities all over India and also abroad. There are some great cactus nurseries also in town that showcases about 1500 variety of cacti. The B.N Pradhan Nursery, Flowerwood Nursery are among the more popular ones to visit.

Dr. Grahams Home is an orphanage built in 1900 by Dr. J.A Graham, a missionary. Till today it remains one of the best schools in the hills and is famous for its philanthropic activity. Many foreigners and Indians volunteer to serve at the school during their extended tours.

Bagdogra airport, located close to Siliguri is the nearest airport and is some 79 km from Kalimpong. From the airport, you can take a taxi to reach Kalimpong.
By rail, New Jalpaiguri (NJP) railway station serves Kalimpong and you can easily reach Delo by hiring a taxi from the station.
